Interactive Math Sites

Most of these sites contain Java or Flash media applets that allow the user to manipulate objects to learn mathematical concepts.

The Annenburg Channel: Space and Shape in Geometry - http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/geometry/

Activities from the Annenburg Channel. "This lab divides activities into two broad categories. Activities about shape center on identifying properties of various shapes and

measuring their dimensions. Activities about space focus on moving objects—or yourself—around in your imagination, and visualizing how things will look."

Applets on the Web - http://ambleweb.digitalbrain.com/ambleweb/ambleweb/ambleweb/mentalmaths/?verb=list

Amblewood Primary School's Applets on the Web. There are many interactive applets here. I like the virtual protractor. The interface takes a little getting used to.

Figure This - http://www.figurethis.org/

A site from NCTM aimed at family outreach. "Helping families enjoy mathematics outside school through a series of fun and engaging, high-quality challenges".

Integer Bars (or Cuisenaire Rods) - http://arcytech.org/java/integers/

This site contains interactive activities involving virtual Cuisenaire rods.

Interactive Games for Primary Grades - http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/toftwood/resources.html

"Welcome to the Toftwood Infant School website. Here we show the work that

we have done..."

Interactive Mathematics Miscellany and Puzzles - http://www.cut-the-knot.org

"Learning starts from wondering, and another purpose of this site is to serve as a resource for things, simple but curious, related to Mathematics." 2003 Winner of Scientific American's Scitech Web Awards. Choose the Interactive Mathematics Activities link on this page.

The Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications - http://www.joma.org/

"The Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications (JOMA) is a publication of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).  JOMA takes advantage of the World Wide Web as a publication medium for materials containing dynamic, full-color graphics; internal and external hyperlinks to related resources; applets in Java, Flash, Shockwave, or other languages; MathML, SVG, and other XML markups; audio and video clips; and other Web-based features. "

Math Puzzles - http://enchantedmind.com/html/puzzles/interactive_puzzles/creative_java_puzzles.html

"The purpose of this site is to create a daily experience of humor, inspiration and creative problem solving."

The Maths Files Game Show -  http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/mathsfile/gameswheel.html

An interactive website in game format from the British Broadcasting Company.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics: Interactive Math Tools - http://illuminations.nctm.org/mathlets/index.html

"Interactive Math Tools are Java applets you can use to explore math and create  interactive lessons. See our I-Math Investigations for examples of lessons that use some of these tools. "

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics: I-Math Investigations - http://illuminations.nctm.org/imath/

"I-Math Investigations are online, interactive, multimedia math investigations. All i-Maths are built around interactive math Java applets, and some also include video

clips."

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - http://matti.usu.edu/nlvm/nav/vlibrary.html

"This is a three-year NSF supported project to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-8 emphasis).”

The Shodar Foundation: Activities - http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/index.html

"These activities listed below are designed for either group or individual exploration into concepts from middle school mathematics. The activities are Java applets and as such

require a java-capable browser... The Shodor Foundation is a non-profit research and education organization dedicated to the advancement of science and math education, specifically through the use of modeling and simulation technologies."

Teacherlink: Interactive Mathematics Projects using Macromedia Flash - http://teacherlink.org/content/math/interactive/flash/top.html

A collection of interactive math explorations. About four of them target elementary school students. The rest are Pre-calculus/Calculus topics.

Virtual Laboratories in Probability and Statistics - http://www.math.uah.edu/stat/

"The goal of this project is to provide free, high quality, interactive, web-based resources for students and teachers of probability and statistics. Basically, our project consists of an integrated set of components that includes expository text, applets, data sets, graphics, and other elements. Please read the introduction for more information about the content, structure, mathematical prerequisites, and organization of the project."

Not an interactive page, but one I felt needed to be listed list this issue due to the conference just ending:

NCTM National Conference in Philadelphia: Presenters Webpages -

http://poweredge.nctm.org/convention/weblinks.asp?eventid=34

Speaker Handouts - Some speakers have linked their Web pages consisting of session handouts and other information to nctm.org. This information will be available the day after the speaker's session through August 2004.”
